This book is divided into three parts for easy reference. Part I discusses the basic principles of herbal medicine and outlines the properties and characteristics of some one hundred sixty single herbs and sixty herbal combination formulas. Part II describes more than one hundred fifty common disorders, conveniently arranged in alphabetical order from acne to yeast infection, and names the herbal therapies that can be used in the treatment of those conditions. Part III is a guide to using various kinds of herbal and other alternative therapies. In addition, it includes self-diagnostic tests and boxed insets throughout, which offer detailed information on a wide variety of topics. Complete coverage of Chinese and Ayurvedic herbs make this volume entirely comprehensive, and thorough scientific references lend it an authority not found in any other herbal book. Prescription or Poison?: The Benefits and Dangers of Herbal Remedies
by: Amitava Dasgupta
publisher: Hunter House, published: 2010-06-08
EAN: 9780897935500
sales rank: 770983
price: $5.49 (new), $5.49 (used)
The widely used herbal antidepressant kava is damaging to the liver. Pregnant women should avoid most herbal remedies because of pesticides and preservatives required in the growth and storage of the herbs. Most ayurvedic medicines contain unacceptable levels of lead and other heavy metals. St. John's Wort could complicate any chronic medical condition. Many people see herbal remedies as "natural" and therefore safe, but in Prescription or Poison? Dr. Amitava Dasgupta explains that one of his first pharmacology professors taught him that "medicine" is just another word for "poison" and all medicines of any kind should be treated with great caution. This book, written for the layperson but based on solid science and research, explains how toxic many alternative remedies can be, alone or in combination with widely prescribed drug treatments. He includes detailed information on the proper use of alternative medicines and their history of good results, while also cautioning readers in this wake-up call about the casual, often uninformed, and sometimes damaging use of alternative remedies.

Herbs And Spices That Go With Chicken Article The Most Effective Herbs For Depression
"There are a number of different herbs for depression.
It is possible to heal depression naturally with herbal remedies or
nutritional support. The right herb or nutritional supplement to choose
depends on the type of depressive disorder from which you suffer; the
symptoms and the cause.
If you experience an unexpected change in your life, such as the loss of a
spouse, child or other loved one, some emotional distress is a normal, if
uncomfortable reaction. A divorce, job loss or financial problem can also cause
distress. Sometimes these changes can add up and accumulate to the point of
feeling overwhelmed.
Seasonal Changes
Some people suffer from depressive symptoms only during the winter time. It is
actually easier to heal depression naturally when it is seasonal. The most
common cause of the depressed feelings is vitamin D deficiency that occurs due
to lack of exposure to the sun.
Other nutrients may be absent in the diet during the wintertime, because of a
lack of fresh greens and other vegetables. A good multi-nutritional supplement
is often all that is necessary, although you can certainly try some of the herbs
for depression as well. They are all safe and without side effects.
Herbs for Depression:
--Passionflower
--St. John's wort
--Valerian
--Chamomile
--Hops
--Ginseng
--Ginkgo biloba
Any of the above herbs can be used for a temporary lift. Valerian, chamomile and
hops are particularly helpful when sleep is interrupted by worries or sadness.
Other herbs, such as St. John's wort and passionflower can help heal depression
naturally, but they must be used on a regular basis to provide results. When a
cause for the depressed feelings can be identified, these herbs may be
unnecessary.
Underlying Illnesses, Aging and Prescription or Over-the-Counter Medications
Illnesses, particularly those that are chronic, often cause depressed feelings.
Some people experience them as they get older as well.
Prescription and over-the-counter medications that may cause the feelings of
depression include:
--High blood pressure meds
--Sleeping pills
--Alcohol
--Nicotine
If you are taking prescription medications, find out what the side effects are.
Talk to your doctor. It may be possible to reduce depression symptoms by
changing your medication.
An occasional alcoholic beverage can help with sleep and could be good for your
heart. But, more than a drink or two per day may contribute to depression.
Cigarette smoking may also.
When there is no underlying reason and the depressed feelings continue for more
than a few days, a psychiatrist might say that a person is clinically depressed.
Of all of the herbs for depression, St John's wort and passionflower are the
most effective for clinical symptoms.
Some clinical studies of St. John's wort have shown that this herb can be just
as effective as prescription drugs, but without the side effects. This is
especially the case for mild to moderate anxiety and depression symptoms. For
more information, talk to an herbalist or doctor of naturopathic medicine.
