This book is divided into three parts for easy reference. Part I discusses the basic principles of herbal medicine and outlines the properties and characteristics of some one hundred sixty single herbs and sixty herbal combination formulas. Part II describes more than one hundred fifty common disorders, conveniently arranged in alphabetical order from acne to yeast infection, and names the herbal therapies that can be used in the treatment of those conditions. Part III is a guide to using various kinds of herbal and other alternative therapies. In addition, it includes self-diagnostic tests and boxed insets throughout, which offer detailed information on a wide variety of topics.

Complete coverage of Chinese and Ayurvedic herbs make this volume entirely comprehensive, and thorough scientific references lend it an authority not found in any other herbal book. Prescription or Poison?: The Benefits and Dangers of Herbal Remedies
by: Amitava Dasgupta
publisher: Hunter House, published: 2010-06-08
EAN: 9780897935500
sales rank: 862750
price: $5.40 (new), $5.49 (used)
The widely used herbal antidepressant kava is damaging to the liver. Pregnant women should avoid most herbal remedies because of pesticides and preservatives required in the growth and storage of the herbs. Most ayurvedic medicines contain unacceptable levels of lead and other heavy metals. St. John's Wort could complicate any chronic medical condition. Many people see herbal remedies as "natural" and therefore safe, but in Prescription or Poison? Dr. Amitava Dasgupta explains that one of his first pharmacology professors taught him that "medicine" is just another word for "poison" and all medicines of any kind should be treated with great caution. This book, written for the layperson but based on solid science and research, explains how toxic many alternative remedies can be, alone or in combination with widely prescribed drug treatments. He includes detailed information on the proper use of alternative medicines and their history of good results, while also cautioning readers in this wake-up call about the casual, often uninformed, and sometimes damaging use of alternative remedies.

New Treatments for Depression Choices - New Treatments for Depression Explained

Depression plagues thousands of people and has probably since the human race came into existence. There have been remedies through the centuries that have been used but have been limited. There weren't very many remedies and it was sometimes tortuous to try them out before success came. Now in the 21st century there are many more new treatments for depression available.

With the ever increasing desire to be more healthful and consume more natural things, there has been development of non-pharmaceutical methods and pharmaceuticals that have much less side effects.

Let's take a look at a few of the new treatments for depression.

Booster drugs are new and their action is to enhance the performance of the primary drug (usually an antidepressant). Popular booster drugs include Cytonel, Lithium, and Ritalin.

These boosters do not work for everyone but work well about 50% of the time.

Hormone Therapy is not necessarily new in itself but the approach that will be described is up and coming. This approach is used primarily in menopausal women at all levels. It is believed that women become depressed because they have an identifiable imbalance of Estrogen and progesterone. How much is prescribed varies from person to person. An evaluation by a skilled neuro-endocrinologist must be done in order to implement this treatment.

VNS - Vagal nerve stimulation is an invasive procedure wherein a pacemaker like device is placed in the chest and regular electrical currents are delivered to the Vagal nerve that runs from the neck to the brain. The stimulation is believed to help relieve the symptoms of severe depression.

TMS - Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation is currently considered an experimental treatment yet many hospitals and clinic do provide it. A wire coil is charged with an electrical current. The coil is then passed over the head and creates a magnetic pulse that stimulates nerve cells in the brain. RTMS- Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation is a procedure where magnets are placed on the head and are believed to alter the electrical current to the part of the brain that controls mood.

While not new herbal treatments for depression are gaining in popularity again. Many people want to return to natural products using herbs for a variety of purposes. Many nutrients, minerals, enzymes, herbs, and botanicals are put together in a specific protocol in order to get the most effective results possible.

Some supplements from New Zealand combines specific herbs, nutrients, vitamins etc. related to depression into one supplement. It is made in pharmaceutical grade and the metabolic path of each ingredient is checked at the molecular level including any interactions between them. This ensures its naturalness, its purity, as well as its efficacy.

Depression is a reality for so many people and many feel ashamed to admit they need help. Support is available in many forms and if you are concerned about the effects of medications, considering natural treatments with herbal and nutritional supplements may be the best option for you.
