This book is divided into three parts for easy reference. Part I discusses the basic principles of herbal medicine and outlines the properties and characteristics of some one hundred sixty single herbs and sixty herbal combination formulas. Part II describes more than one hundred fifty common disorders, conveniently arranged in alphabetical order from acne to yeast infection, and names the herbal therapies that can be used in the treatment of those conditions. Part III is a guide to using various kinds of herbal and other alternative therapies. In addition, it includes self-diagnostic tests and boxed insets throughout, which offer detailed information on a wide variety of topics.

Complete coverage of Chinese and Ayurvedic herbs make this volume entirely comprehensive, and thorough scientific references lend it an authority not found in any other herbal book. Prescription or Poison?: The Benefits and Dangers of Herbal Remedies
by: Amitava Dasgupta
publisher: Hunter House, published: 2010-06-08
EAN: 9780897935500
sales rank: 862750
price: $5.40 (new), $5.49 (used)
The widely used herbal antidepressant kava is damaging to the liver. Pregnant women should avoid most herbal remedies because of pesticides and preservatives required in the growth and storage of the herbs. Most ayurvedic medicines contain unacceptable levels of lead and other heavy metals. St. John's Wort could complicate any chronic medical condition. Many people see herbal remedies as "natural" and therefore safe, but in Prescription or Poison? Dr. Amitava Dasgupta explains that one of his first pharmacology professors taught him that "medicine" is just another word for "poison" and all medicines of any kind should be treated with great caution. This book, written for the layperson but based on solid science and research, explains how toxic many alternative remedies can be, alone or in combination with widely prescribed drug treatments. He includes detailed information on the proper use of alternative medicines and their history of good results, while also cautioning readers in this wake-up call about the casual, often uninformed, and sometimes damaging use of alternative remedies.

A Few Useful Natural Remedies For Depression

If you experience depression, you should know that you're not alone in your despair. Countless individuals experience the same issues you do, and many of those people find that natural remedies for depression can offer invaluable help.

There are many side effects associated with anti-depressants. And, many find that the assistance they offer is but a temporary measure to the problem. A more long term and effective way to fight depression is to apply natural remedies.

The following treatments are some of the most commonly used natural remedies for depression:

Saint John's Wort

The ancient Greek's found this herb helpful in alleviating mental issues 100's of years ago. The hypercin and hyperforin in this plants yellow flowers is thought to provide positive mind altering changes.

Numerous researches have illustrated that St. John's Wort compares in efficacy to prescription anti-depressants when it comes to treatment of depression of a mild to medium form.

If having St. John's Wort tea, simply put a teaspoon of the tea into a cup of boiling water. For best results, use tea leaves that are well dried, then allow it to boil for roughly five minutes.

5-HTP (5-Hydroxy-Tryptophan)

Griffonia simplicifolia generates the compound called 5-HTP. The human body also produces 5- Hydroxy- Trptophan. It is a compound that helps the body deal with functions of the brain by assisting in the conversion of the amino acid tryptophan to serotonin. It's also been known to be a useful remedy for insomnia, as the body also uses the compound to normalize sleep patterns.

5-HTP is usually available in capsule form. Its important to understand that taking more than the recommended dosage of 5-HTP can be detrimental to your health. The body can also build up a tolerance for this herbal remedy, once it's taken for a long time.

Each person will realize different effects by using this herb. It's commonly suggested that the herb be ingested without food. Be sure you consult with your physician to understand the ways in which this herb may cause harmful interactions with other supplements you may be already taking.

The Benefit of Omega 3 Fatty Acids

You are likely to find that fish oil is very useful in stabilizing brain function and helping you sustain your mental equilibrium.

Fish oils not only help the brain. Omega-3 fatty acids are also helpful in preventing heart attacks, maintaining healthy blood pressure and preventing inflammation. You can get omega-3 fatty acids by eating more seafood -- especially salmon or other cold water fish -- or taking it in capsule form.

As you select fish oil capsules, be certain to confirm proper dosage. The label on the supplement bottle will indicate the percentage of the RDA (Recommended Daily Allowance) contained in each capsule. For optimal effect, each should be a minimum of no less than thirty percent of RDA. Some people will have a slight allergic reaction, and also possible that the supplement will have a negative interaction with other medicines being taken.

Vitamin B-12

Research has shown that B-12, or folic acid as it is sometimes known, can have an effect on positive feelings and relaxation. That's why, in addition to helping with depression, B-12 is used to help reduce stress.

Meat, fish, eggs, cheese, milk and other dairy products are rich in B-12. Studies have also shown that rates of depression are reduced in countries where the typical diet is high in folic acid and folates. Even though high doses of B-12 have not been found to be toxic, it is still important to take only the recommended amount.

When it comes to regulating brain function and stabilizing mood, natural remedies for depression are extremely helpful. These remedies don't have the negative side effects of prescription drugs.

It's important to consult your doctor before taking any of these remedies. This will make certain that they do not interact with other prescription drugs or supplements you're currently taking. And always remember not to take more than the directed amount.
