The popularity of herbal medicine has exploded during the past decade, with herbal remedies becoming increasingly available in such conventional outlets as drugstores and even supermarkets. Prescription for Herbal Healing brings to herbal medicine the same in-depth, easy-to-understand information and accessible style that Prescription for Nutritional Healing successfully brought to diet and nutritional supplements.

This book is divided into three parts for easy reference. Part I discusses the basic principles of herbal medicine and outlines the properties and characteristics of some one hundred sixty single herbs and sixty herbal combination formulas. Part II describes more than one hundred fifty common disorders, conveniently arranged in alphabetical order from acne to yeast infection, and names the herbal therapies that can be used in the treatment of those conditions. Part III is a guide to using various kinds of herbal and other alternative therapies. In addition, it includes self-diagnostic tests and boxed insets throughout, which offer detailed information on a wide variety of topics.

Complete coverage of Chinese and Ayurvedic herbs make this volume entirely comprehensive, and thorough scientific references lend it an authority not found in any other herbal book. Did you know? Plain old tea is wonderfully healthy! In this special report, you'll learn some amazing things about tea...

Over the past thirty years or so, numerous scientific research studies done in a variety of different parts of the world - with thousands of both human and animal subjects - are showing results which suggest that tea can:

* Help reduce obesity and body fat
* Reduce LDL, or "bad" cholesterol levels
* Improve the body's circulation and blood vessel health
* Improve bone density
* Fight and prevent a variety of cancers
* Boost the body's immune system and resistance to diseases, possibly even HIV

* Relieve, reduce, or prevent inflammatory problems such as rheumatoid arthritis

* Improve teeth strength and health
* Fight and prevent oral diseases
* Reduce stress hormone levels

When most people hear talk of the health benefits of tea, they're usually hearing about green tea. What many don't know however, is that regular black tea has many health properties of it's own too.

Prescription or Poison?: The Benefits and Dangers of Herbal Remedies

The widely used herbal antidepressant kava is damaging to the liver. Pregnant women should avoid most herbal remedies because of pesticides and preservatives required in the growth and storage of the herbs. Most ayurvedic medicines contain unacceptable levels of lead and other heavy metals. St. John's Wort could complicate any chronic medical condition. Many people see herbal remedies as "natural" and therefore safe, but in Prescription or Poison? Dr. Amitava Dasgupta explains that one of his first pharmacology professors taught him that "medicine" is just another word for "poison" and all medicines of any kind should be treated with great caution. This book, written for the layperson but based on solid science and research, explains how toxic many alternative remedies can be, alone or in combination with widely prescribed drug treatments. He includes detailed information on the proper use of alternative medicines and their history of good results, while also cautioning readers in this wake-up call about the casual, often uninformed, and sometimes damaging use of alternative remedies.

Clinical Treatments for Depression

Depression is an illness that is very treatable for the most part. Clinical treatments for Depression can include a wide variety of treatments. If you suspect that you might be depressed, you should seek help immediately. Your physician should be a good source of information on mental health services in your area. You can also contact your local mental health organization for assistance. The physician can also help to determine the best course of treatment to meet your needs.

Treatments

Medical procedures including Electroconvulsive Therapy are often used for more serious cases of Depression or cases that are not responding to other treatments. This procedure induces a seizure which is said to release chemicals in the brain and boost the body's defense system. Long term effects from this procedure include permanent memory loss and possible movement disorders.

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation is done by passing an electrically charge magnetic coil over the scalp. The currents go through the skull and activate the nerve cells in the brain. This is still considered experimental but is said to have possibilities of becoming a very exact treatment and able to treat other brain disorders.

Anti-depressant medications are often prescribed and usually in conjunction with other treatments such as Psychotherapy. In general they work on the chemicals in the brain called Serotonin and Norepinephrine. Anti-depressants have some very serious side effects. Side effects include a possible reduced sex drive, dry mouth, nausea, at the worst

suicidal thinking and/or attempts.

Herbal supplements contain herbs, vitamins, and other nutritional substances. They are effective and have fewer side effects if any at all. The only drawback is that if you are taking prescriptions for other conditions the herbal supplements could reduce their effectiveness. The best supplements have gone through intensive testing. The ingredients' interaction should have been studied and the metabolism of the ingredients should have been tested at the molecular level. This guarantees the safety, purity, potency, and effectiveness of the supplement. It further guarantees the consumer they are getting exactly what the label says they are getting.

Psychotherapy is also called talk therapy. It can help with issue such as eating, sleeping, and rejection by helping you to work it out in conversation with a trained therapist. Psychotherapy might be all that's needed in mild cases but most often it is used along with other treatments such as antidepressants.

Conclusion

Clinical treatments for Depression include medication, psychotherapy and medical procedures such as Electroconvulsive Therapy. Herbal Treatments are also used and may or may not be prescribed by your physician. Before adding anything to your regimen you should consult with your doctor anyway.
