The popularity of herbal medicine has exploded during the past decade, with herbal remedies becoming increasingly available in such conventional outlets as drugstores and even supermarkets. Prescription for Herbal Healing brings to herbal medicine the same in-depth, easy-to-understand information and accessible style that Prescription for Nutritional Healing successfully brought to diet and nutritional supplements.

This book is divided into three parts for easy reference. Part I discusses the basic principles of herbal medicine and outlines the properties and characteristics of some one hundred sixty single herbs and sixty herbal combination formulas. Part II describes more than one hundred fifty common disorders, conveniently arranged in alphabetical order from acne to yeast infection, and names the herbal therapies that can be used in the treatment of those conditions. Part III is a guide to using various kinds of herbal and other alternative therapies. In addition, it includes self-diagnostic tests and boxed insets throughout, which offer detailed information on a wide variety of topics.

Complete coverage of Chinese and Ayurvedic herbs make this volume entirely comprehensive, and thorough scientific references lend it an authority not found in any other herbal book. Prescription for Herbal Healing is the definitive herbal resource and is a necessity for any health-conscious consumer.

Prescription or Poison?: The Benefits and Dangers of Herbal Remedies
by: Amitava Dasgupta
publisher: Hunter House, published: 2010-06-08
EAN: 9780897935500
sales rank: 952785
price: $5.29 (new), $5.30 (used)
The widely used herbal antidepressant kava is damaging to the liver. Pregnant women should avoid most herbal remedies because of pesticides and preservatives required in the growth and storage of the herbs. Most ayurvedic medicines contain unacceptable levels of lead and other heavy metals. St. John's Wort could complicate any chronic medical condition. Many people see herbal remedies as "natural" and therefore safe, but in Prescription or Poison? Dr. Amitava Dasgupta explains that one of his first pharmacology professors taught him that "medicine" is just another word for "poison" and all medicines of any kind should be treated with great caution. This book, written for the layperson but based on solid science and research, explains how toxic many alternative remedies can be, alone or in combination with widely prescribed drug treatments. He includes detailed information on the proper use of alternative medicines and their history of good results, while also cautioning readers in this wake-up call about the casual, often uninformed, and sometimes damaging use of alternative remedies.

Read About The Top Five Herbs For Anxiety!

"If you are suffering from stress and anxiety, than using herbs for anxiety and stress are great as a cure. Even if you are struggling with an anxiety disorder, you may well prefer to check out more natural anxiety remedies as they do not have as many side effects as more conventional medicine.

But which Herbs for anxiety should you use?

As a rule of the herbal anxiety remedies I talk about here can be taken in more than one way. Ie you might use them in tablet form or in a tea or food additive, from your nearby natural remedies outlet. With all of them it is very important to study the instruction and what you can do and should not do such as operating machinery or driving.

Here are five very common (because they work) herbs for anxiety!

Valerian Root.

You might recognize the name as this is the organic form which Valium pills are derived from, but without some of the more rough side effects. Taking a valerian tea before bed can act as a mild sedative and be a wonderful way to help calm down the brain and allow you to have pleasant nights rest.

Passion Flower

If you are looking for a more emotionally balanced day while still being alert and able to do your normal daily functions (assuming you are not doing brain surgery) then Passion Flower could be for you! Very good for those of you who suffer from extremes of emotions going from happy to sad or angry throughout the day. Passion flower will help keep those emotion extremes in check allowing you a more rational and even day.

St. Johns Wort

You may have heard of St. John's Wort in connection with dealing with depression. Even so, it is also commonly used to cure anxiety and stress. It works by inhibiting the neurotransmitters serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine in the brain. You shouldn't expect instant results as it does ordinarily need some weeks before you will begin to feel the results. St. John's Wort does come in alternative doses, but do not attempt and decrease the time it takes to effect you by increasing the dosage.

You should be careful with possible side effects, especially if you are on any other kind of drug, so do consult with your doctor.

Meadow Sweet

If you suffer headaches that are connected to your anxiety and stress than taking Meadow Sweet be an efficient cure. You can have it both as a food additive or in the form of a calming tea.

You should be aware though that Meadow Sweet should not be taken if you have a sensitivity to aspirin and it should on no account be given to children.

Kava Kava

Rapidly becoming the more desirable of the herbs for anxiety, Kava Kava (so good they named it twice) is very useful against insomnia too. Arriving from the South seas, Kava Kava has proven to be nearly as effective in studies compared to the commonly prescribed Valium, without the danger of physical addition. This is a much more strong sedative than Valerian Root so make sure that you have no need to stay awake.

There are alternative herbs for anxiety, but these are the more popular and effective ones. You can do your personal research if you do not use any of the above to aid you in coping with your stress and anxiety.

Remember: Just like with medication, before you take any herbs for anxiety you should confirm with a medical professional. To understand more about herbs for anxiety you could also seek the help from a qualified herbalist.
